Six years in the meat grinder for Sebastian Ayala Henriksen
Sebastian Ayala Henriksen and his crew recently reached a base on their ascent through Copenhagen’s club scene: A permanent space for the foreseeable future.
»There hasn’t been a single moment where I felt certain about anything. It’s only now I’m sure that I have a concept and a crowd – and a space at least for now.«
Since securing their first lease for a space in 2017, Sebastian and his crew of party engineers have been trying to escape their nomadic existence in Copenhagen. Five months into what might be a successful escape, he dwells on his way here and the surrounding scene in Copenhagen.
Den Anden Side opened in November. How have the first months at Axel Torv been?
»Our audience has grown. More people want to come out here.«
You said the new place would be more uncompromising than your previous one Ved Siden Af, which was often a compromise between different interests.
What about the new setup is different?
»We have more control. We are a small group of owners. People I trust. People I have handpicked from the community around Ved Siden Af.«
»We are on a two-year lease with the possibility for extension. The Palads building that houses us is slated to be torn down or renovated at some point. They have wanted to do that since ‘99 or something.«
»So, two years guaranteed and hoping for five. It will probably be somewhere in between.«
»But yeah, what’s different? We have more space and more freedom to express ourselves. To be exactly the place we want to be. At the old place, we shared the club’s economy with the original tenants of the space.«
